Renew Home Rebrands to Everyday Electric, Prioritizes Savings With a Whole-Home Approach
Home energy, as it should be: To address today’s rising energy demand and costs, the company is rebranding and expanding from thermostats to a whole-home solution. This approach puts household savings first and aims to create systemwide benefits through the continued growth of virtual power plants (VPPs).
October 6, 2026 — Renew Home, the largest residential virtual power plant (VPP) operator in the U.S., today announced it is changing its name to Everyday Electric and introducing a new, whole-home VPP. The rebrand reflects the company's expansion beyond smart thermostat optimization into a whole-home solution, as rising energy demand and costs make coordinated household savings more important than ever.
“We’re at a pivotal moment in energy, similar to what we’ve seen before with major infrastructure decisions, and the choices we make now will shape the grid for decades,” said Ben Brown, CEO of Everyday Electric. “We believe the best path forward starts with better utilizing what we already have, so households can save money and the grid gets the flexible capacity it needs. That belief is what's behind our new name. Everyday Electric is our commitment to building the kind of system we've always believed was possible, one that is more reliable and affordable for everyone.”
Addressing today’s increasing costs and expectations
For the first time in decades, electricity demand is rising faster than predicted, driven by electrification and new large-load growth, and putting strain on the grid. The default response—which focuses only on building new infrastructure—is expensive, inefficient, and pushes costs onto households. That combination of rising demand and rising costs is what makes this moment different: Without a faster, more cost-efficient approach for adding capacity that doesn’t only rely on new infrastructure, households are likely to keep absorbing the difference. Everyday Electric is taking a different approach to meeting demand, focusing first on better utilization that prioritizes household savings.
Based on commissioned research, the company believes the market is ready for this new approach to home energy management and savings. 58% of multi-device owners say their energy bill is getting harder to manage, and 81% of customers want to know how their energy products are saving them money to ensure they are getting the benefits they expect. Everyday Electric aims to meet these expectations directly with integrated savings experiences and the company’s virtual power plant, Everyday VPP.
“Saving money and energy at home should be easier,” said Jeff Gleeson, Chief Product Officer at Everyday Electric. “We’ve already seen that when energy use flexes naturally with people’s lives, costs can go down and capacity can go up in meaningful ways. Now, we’re working toward helping households save over $5 billion in the next five years, and that includes every household our energy provider partners serve, not just homes with smart products.”
Building a better future alongside partners and across the home
By better utilizing existing resources, Everyday Electric aims to minimize the immediate need for more expensive, less sustainable infrastructure that would otherwise continue to drive up costs and carbon emissions. The company points to virtual power plants as a more scalable, cost-efficient way to add capacity, and is introducing Everyday VPP, a personalized virtual power plant that builds upon traditional demand response programs. For existing and new energy provider partners, this means:
OEM-embedded activation: Integrated energy experiences make it easier for customers to turn on savings and rewards features, also reducing the marketing burden on our energy partners.
Personalized adjustments: Customers participate at the level that fits their life, increasing satisfaction and unlocking more VPP capacity.
Connected insights: Our new savings link capability helps utilities surface energy insights and savings recommendations right where customers already manage their home energy.
Whole-home reach: Direct partnerships with HVAC, EV, EVSE, storage, and solar OEMs coordinate these devices into one system, adding up to greater VPP capacity.
Utility-grade operations: Energy partners get hyper-local dispatch, AMI-based EM&V, real-time forecasting, and load shaping, all built-in at no additional cost.
Boosted cost effectiveness: Energy partners pay based on resource performance, not platform or marketing fees, lowering program costs and freeing up budget to reward more customers.
Everyday Electric brings its same savings-first principles to an expanding list of OEM partners, integrating savings experiences into people’s home energy products and enabling seamless VPP participation.
The company has already proven its approach at scale. Everyday Electric was founded as Renew Home in 2024 by leaders from Google Nest energy and Google AI Labs teams, in partnership with Sidewalk Infrastructure Partners. The team ran customer-centric energy programs for Nest thermostat customers that established a core finding the company is now applying more broadly: Comfort and convenience centric flexibility is what scales, adding up to capacity the size of a fleet of power plants. The company is now aiming to extend that same model beyond HVAC to the rest of the connected home.
Expanding into electric vehicles with a turnkey acquisition
To help accelerate its growth outside of HVAC, Everyday Electric also announced today that it has acquired Smartcar, a connected-vehicle platform that allows drivers to connect their vehicles with energy and mobility companies without additional hardware. The acquisition extends Everyday Electric's energy solutions to include electric vehicles, bringing vehicle connectivity and integrations in-house to support simplified customer savings and managed charging as part of the utility programs the company operates.
Creating reliability and affordability across the grid
As more products in the home unlock savings and provide flexible capacity, Everyday Electric is working toward a system where affordability and reliability compound rather than trade off, lowering costs not just for participating households, but for everyone across the grid.
